*+* Book Review *+*Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella
Rating: 5 Stars *****Date Started: 08/08/07Date Finished: 10/08/07"Just a little something will do..."This sounds familiar to me too!Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella is the first book released of her "Shopaholic" series. The rest of the sequels are Shopaholic Takes Manhattan, Shopaholic Ties the Knot, Shopaholic & Sister and the latest installment is Shopaholic and Baby! In my local forums, this title has been mentioned alot alot of times! I'm not into Chick-Lit usually, but due to it's girly pink and cute cover (yes i'm a sucker for cute n nice cover!), i did a search at Amazon.
Reading the reviews there, i got to know that this book is about "Shopping" which is my favorite pastime as well! So i couldn't resist, and i added this book into my LibraryThing's Wishlist. I've actually bought the "Shopaholic Ties the Knot" before this book, but after doing some research online, i've found out that "Confessions of a Shopaholic" should be the first to read if I wanted to follow the whole series to get a "clearer" picture of the story and the characters' background. So I hold-on to the one i bought on mistake, and finally I bought this "Confessions of a Shopaholic" during my visit to Novena Square's MPH Bookstore.
And to tell you, I've never regret getting this funny and entertaining book!
It's a very hilarious and laugh-out-loud book! A book that can lighten up your mood if you're feeling down or bored. During the first 50 pages of the book, i just couldn't "get into" the story because I'm not sure whether I'm really into Chick-Lit or just buying this book for the sake of it's cute cover. But after reading and reading..I've found myself getting more and more interested of the story! The story of our heroine "Becky"! How she's going to cope with all those dismal letters from her VISA and the Endwich Bank? and so on...
The most impressive and funny part was the part where she worked as a Sales Assistant in a fashion boutique shop. She saw a pair of a zebra-print jeans which she loves so much that she's planning to get it after her work. Until a customer was queuing to try on that particular jeans that she liked, she's afraid that the customer will eventually bought it, so she actually "hide" it from that customer under the fitting room's curtain! That part really made me laugh out very loud!!! Its simply hilarious! Once you "get into" the story, you'll not want to put this book down again!
In Confessions of a Shopaholic, our heroine "Becky" also known as Miss Rebecca Bloomwood was a young twenty-five years old Financial Journalist in London. She's got a big heart, big dreams and just one little weakness...that is she cannot resist buying things once she step into a shop! Just a little something..a little something to make herself happy! Whenever she passby those trendy boutiques after work, there's always something that she "must-have". Despite receiving all those VISA's bills sent to her, she simply dump it into her dressing table's drawer without even taking a look at them. The facts was that she's not earning much with her Journalist job at Successful Saving, she can't afford them all, but she keeps on coming up with lots and lots of excuses thinking that what she have bought were all necessary. She's always dreaming of winning the lottery, or marry someone rich so that she can pay off all her bills....
This is the first book I've read by author Sophie Kinsella. It's also my first Chick-Lit book as well. After reading this book, I've totally changed my view on Chick-Lit genre. Usually I'll go for those stories that's either comes with deep plots, or mostly romance genre in particular but after reading Sophie Kinsella's Shopaholic book, I'm hooked! I'm planning to get ALL her Shopaholic series once I hit the bookstore again =D
All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book. It's really reminded me of myself, because I am one that loves to shop as well but of course not as bad as our heroine "Becky"...
I would recommend this book to all the girls out there, if you happens to loves shopping just like our heroine "Becky", I'm sure you'll like this book as well =D
